Back to News Update Rwanda African Management Institute and the Mastercard Foundation Launch Resilience Prize to Celebrate Entrepreneurs in Rwanda 5 Apr 2022 The AMI Resilience Prize will acknowledge the milestones of AMI graduate entrepreneurs and the impact of their businesses on the community. The AMI Resilience Prize is open to all entrepreneurs who have completed AMI business programmes. The top six entrepreneurs from across the four provinces of Rwanda and the City of Kigali will each receive a cash prize of Rwf 1,000,000 and business support services from AMI. The African Management Institute (Rwanda) , in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation , has launched the AMI Resilience Prize to recognize and celebrate the resilience and impact of entrepreneurs who have completed AMI business programmes. When the Covid-19 pandemic started, AMI worked hard to support entrepreneurs to stay resilient and quickly adapt to changes. Since then, the African Management Institute engaged with over 2000 entrepreneurs in Rwanda to equip them with skills, practical tools, and knowledge to grow their businesses, increase revenues, and create jobs. Entrepreneurs who have completed AMI programmes, including the Business Survival Bootcamp, Survive to Thrive, Take Your Business Online or Grow Your Business, and made a remarkable impact within their businesses and communities, are eligible to apply for the AMI Resilience Prize. Five prizes will be awarded to entrepreneurs from the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western provinces and the City of Kigali. The sixth prize, a People’s Choice award, will be given to the entrepreneur who receives the most votes from the public. “We are excited to celebrate the resilience and persistence of entrepreneurs through the AMI Resilience Prize. The prize will shine a spotlight on how companies have evolved after completing our programmes and the impact they have had. In addition to cash prizes, the top entrepreneurs will gain extended access to AMI’s business tools. I encourage entrepreneurs to apply and partners to join us in this campaign,” said Malik Shaffy, AMI Rwanda Country Manager. AMI partners with the Mastercard Foundation to provide supervisors and aspiring supervisors with hands-on management and leadership skills training. AMI also supports entrepreneurs to drive growth in their businesses and create employment opportunities. Eligible entrepreneurs are encouraged to apply for the AMI Resilience Prize by 11:59 PM (Kigali time) on 20th April 2022 to stand the chance of being rewarded as the top performing entrepreneurs in their respective categories. Unlocking growth during Nigeria’s Covid-19 lockdowns All Stories Vivien Torbunde Position: Owner Company: Me2U Enterprises Programme: Survive to Thrive Country: Nigeria Vivien Torbunde has over 10 years of business experience. Having founded Me2U Enterprises back in 2010, she describes these past years as a great learning curve. During this time she’s learned new things, made mistakes and tested ideas to see what works and what doesn’t. Vivien recently completed AMI’s Survive to Thrive business resilience and growth programme which she says was very timely. It helped her strengthen her business amidst Nigeria’s Covid-19 restrictions and lockdowns. “When the pandemic hit Benue State in Nigeria, food businesses were allowed to continue operating, but we were forced to shut down for around three months. This affected our sales and made it hard for us to maintain staff salaries among other business obligations.” It was during this time that Vivien joined the Survive to Thrive business growth programme, which aims to equip business leaders with the tools to immediately address challenges and seize opportunities during difficult times. She says the programme gave her confidence to push herself and lead during the crisis. Together with her team, they enrolled and began developing a plan to reopen. “Through this programme, I was able to restructure and reopen. Having closed shop, our sales had dropped but after reopening, things started to pick up. What we made in six months, four of which we were actively part of the programme, is what we would make on average in a year. It was beyond our imagination.” Being part of the programme pushed Vivien out of her comfort zone, which led to her landing a big contract, something that she says had never happened before. “The way I know myself, if I was not part of the programme, I would not have closed that big contract. I simply wouldn’t have gained that much courage to put myself out there in the middle of a pandemic to find business. The timing for the programme was just perfect.”

Investment Multiplier: How One Ecosystem Actor Scaled to Transform 300+ Businesses All Stories Position: Owner Company: Jane Namara Programme: Grow Lab Programme Country: Uganda MEETING ENTREPRENEURS AT THE LAST MILE : A STORY OF CONFIDENCE Long before joining AMI in November 2023, Jane was already a hands-on champion for SMEs and MSMEs across Uganda. She didn't offer consultation services, she lived the entrepreneurial hustle alongside her clients. By navigating the daily grit and grind firsthand, she gained an authentic understanding of their realities, allowing her to support them in moving their businesses forward. However, as more entrepreneurs sought her support, a new challenge emerged. The demand was growing, but her time wasn't. Much of her work relied on manual planning and processes that consumed valuable hours. Proposal development often felt like an uphill task, making it difficult to compete for larger opportunities. Scaling that impact sustainably proved to be challenging. "I knew I could help more businesses," Jane recalls. "The challenge was finding a way to do it effectively without stretching myself too thin." Joining AMI marked a turning point. Equipped with practical training and research-backed Business Development Services (BDS) tools, Jane finally found the structure she had been missing. From financial diagnostics and cash flow management to proposal development and capacity building, she gained a robust toolkit, one she instantly integrated into her daily practice. Since then, planning and budgeting have become more streamlined. Her training delivery has become more structured. Instead of building approaches from scratch each time, Jane began relying on consistent, evidence-backed methodologies that improved the quality of support, enabling her to manage multiple projects simultaneously. "Finally, I have systems that feel like partners," she reflects, her eyes lighting up. "The structure isn’t just organizing my work. It has given me a new level of confidence in the quality and delivery of my work." She secured four new contracts, including partnerships with MTN Foundation and KCB Foundation, organisations that once felt beyond reach. In addition, by partnering with Movit Products, she has trained more than 300 salon and beauty entrepreneurs across Eastern Uganda in customer care, marketing, and record-keeping. She is currently working with Pureflow Company in delivering financial literacy training to boda boda riders, equipping an entirely different group of entrepreneurs with practical business skills. For Jane, impact has never been about having all the answers. "Sometimes impact looks like walking alongside someone until confidence takes the lead in their own story," she says. Today, Jane is serving more businesses, managing her work more effectively and delivering high-quality support while building a stronger future greater than herself.

This experience shaped her desire to use the knowledge she gained to support others, particularly farmers and young people, to improve their livelihoods and create more sustainable sources of income. Her impact began close to home. Within her own family, she identified a pattern of spending without structure, which made it difficult to achieve any meaningful financial progress. She introduced simple but practical solutions, helping her parents create a household budget and start a small savings system. By setting aside 2,000 RWF each week, the family was able to save 144,000 RWF in six months, which they later invested and began generating returns from. This experience demonstrated how small, consistent actions can lead to tangible financial improvement. She extended this same approach to young people in her community, where unemployment was common and many spent their days without productive activity. Joselyne brought them together to form a group focused on small income-generating activities combined with regular savings. Each member contributed 1,000 RWF weekly, building a shared fund that is now being prepared for investment. This initiative not only created a sense of purpose among the youth but also introduced them to discipline, collaboration, and financial planning. Through her work, Joselyne has reached over 3,000 young people, focusing on building foundational habits such as saving, working consistently, and recording business activities. While the youth she supports have not yet accessed loans, largely because funding opportunities have not reached them, she continues to prepare them so they are ready when access becomes available. Her approach emphasizes readiness, ensuring that once financial opportunities arise, they can be used effectively. One of the key lessons she has taken from this role is the importance of hard work combined with discipline, especially the habit of recording business activities. She believes that without structure and accountability, growth is difficult to sustain, regardless of the opportunities available. Looking ahead, her hope is that young people in her community will gain access to financial support that enables them to expand their efforts and improve their lives. She believes they already have the potential and the willingness to work, and that access to capital would unlock even greater progress. Her message to young people is direct and empowering: they should take initiative, stop waiting for external support, and start building with what they have.
