Diamond in the Rough: Growing Karen Fruits into a Community Anchor All Stories Wanjiku Ng'ethe Position: Founder Company: Karen Fruits & Veges Programme: Grow Your Business Country: Kenya What began as a desperate move to make ends meet has become a vital part of Wanjiku’s community. “I was unemployed, and no one was hiring in the field I had trained for,” she shares. “But we’ve always been in farming. I saw a gap in the market and opened a small retail shop to sell our farm produce.” Her shop quickly became a vital link between local farmers and customers in her neighbourhood. But behind the fresh displays and steady sales, Wanjiku was fighting quiet battles such as staff motivation, poor planning, theft, and the overwhelming pressure of doing everything herself. “I lacked professionalism in how I ran my business. It was run on instinct, not systems. I was just trying to survive.” That changed when she joined the Grow Your Business (GYB) programme. Through AMI’s practical training, Wanjiku began reshaping the way she worked, starting with herself. “The programme revealed some hard truths about how I was running things. It wasn’t easy. But I had a choice: give up or knuckle under. I chose to grow.” “The Grow Your Business (GYB) programme pushed me to face tough truths about my business, from poor planning to staff issues, even theft. But it also gave me practical tools to turn things around. I became more organised, improved accountability, and learned how to motivate my team. Since then, our revenue has grown by over 84%, we’ve hired a young team member for fulfilment, and even started co-marketing with suppliers. I’ve learned that asking for help isn’t weakness, it’s growth. " With AMI’s tools and guidance, Wanjiku introduced new systems for accountability, clear recordkeeping, and staff motivation. She learned to outsource time-consuming tasks like bookkeeping and began making decisions based on data, not just gut instinct. One of her biggest lessons? “You can’t know or do everything. Asking for help isn’t weakness, it’s smart. I’ve become obsessed with learning now, always seeking new info on business and farming.” The results speak for themselves. Since the programme, Karen Fruits and Veges has grown revenue by 84.4% and added a new staff member, a 23-year-old man who handles the heavy lifting for bulk orders, and receives housing from the business. Wanjiku also began co-marketing with suppliers, boosting visibility for both her business and theirs. “My suppliers have benefited the most,” she says. “We’re ordering more and collaborating more.” And while profits are rising, she’s just as proud of the small shifts that reflect bigger change, like encouraging customers to return and reuse egg punnets and cutting down on plastic packaging. Karen Fruits and Veges is still growing, but now it’s growing on purpose. With stronger systems, clearer direction, and a fierce commitment to community and sustainability, Wanjiku’s small shop has become a source of livelihood and learning, not just for her, but for those around her. “I’m still learning,” she says. “But I’m breathing easier. This business is a diamond in the rough, and now, I can finally see the shine.” Download Wanjiku Nge'the's Story Download AMI's 2024 Impact Report

  • Partnering with an Impact Investor to Equip Managers Across Africa | AMI

Partnering with an Impact Investor to Equip Managers Across Africa All Stories Position: Company: Acumen Programme: Country: Global impact investor Acumen saw a major bottleneck in many portfolio companies in Africa. “Talent is the biggest issue for many of our investee companies, whether they know it or not,” said Molly Alexander, head of talent development at Acumen. “The so-called soft skills required to lead teams and successfully manage change are difficult to find, and rarely addressed by traditional training options.” Without strong leadership skills among middle and senior managers, these businesses were limited in their ability to scale. AMI developed programmes focused on people management and strategic problem solving for managers and leaders at social benefit companies from across East and West Africa. Through engaging in-person workshops, hands-on practice, peer coaching, and an extensive online learning platform, the participants gained key leadership skills, and knowledge about organisational transformation and management practices. “Really from the first lab I changed my way of leading,” explains Mathewos Erusmo, chief marketing officer of EthioChicken. “I’m more focused on the listening part and talking less.” Susan Kuria, sales activation manager of Burn Manufacturing, especially enjoyed how practical and collaborative the programme was. “Everyone just gets to interact,” she says. “I love the role plays. There are so many tools attached to every course really to just assess how are you able to apply all those in real life.” Every participant reported applying what they learned directly to their work; 100% of their CEOs saw an improvement in their performance after the programme. In addition, 97% of participants said they acquired brand new management skills. “I need to enroll in something that can enrich me and make me a better person than I am right now, and AMI has been that platform for me,” says Susan. The results speak to the transformational impact of AMI’s blended learning approach. According to Molly Alexander of Acumen, “AMI’s user-centric approach to learning makes them the perfect partner to build programmes for our portfolio companies.” Acumen has since run three further management programmes with AMI. The first cohort was fully funded by Acumen; portfolio companies now pay most of the cost themselves and many send several participants.

  • AMI partners with South Africa's Zevoli Growth Partners to deliver MSME Future Forge programme | AMI

Back to News News South Africa AMI partners with South Africa's Zevoli Growth Partners to deliver MSME Future Forge programme 4 Oct 2022 View the original press release The African Management Institute (AMI) has partnered with South Africa’s leading enterprise and supplier diversity advisory and project management firm, Zevoli Growth Partners to strengthen the performance of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that support the mining sector with a comprehensive business development programme. Zevoli Growth Partners Managing Director and co-founder, Mpopi Khupe, says the company has joined forces with AMI to develop “ MSME Future Forge for Mining Supplier Diversity ” , a tailored programme specifically for early-stage and growth businesses looking to become procurement partners for mining houses. “While we provide the participating MSMEs with the business development support they need to become procurement ready, we also leverage partners like AMI for the learning and development component to co-create programmes and implement them on behalf of our mining clients,” says Khupe. To date, close to 100 MSMEs have completed the 10-month development programme, which is made up of three main components – mentorship and coaching; learning and development; industry specific compliance and tools and systems. Khupe notes that following the completion of the programme, most of the participating MSMEs were able to establish work and procurement relationships with the mining houses that sponsored the programmes, with some even doubling their revenue and hiring more people. Bridging the disconnect: Understanding corporate and MSME needs. She explains that the programme holds numerous benefits for both MSMEs and the corporate clients as it addresses the disconnect between the requirements of mining corporates, and the expectations of the MSMEs seeking to become providers. “For mining corporates, there is the tangible benefit of being able to proactively communicate their requirements from a supply chain localisation, compliance and technical capability perspective. This applies to any business with whom a mining corporate wants to work – they want to know that operationally, an MSME is running safely, efficiently and sustainably to enter into a medium- to long-term contract. There can’t be a risk of an MSME not being able to sustainably deliver on the contract,” says Khupe. “From the MSME’s side, there often isn’t an understanding of the hurdles they need to overcome to establish and sustain a working relationship with mining corporates. So when MSMEs are afforded the opportunity it’s critical that they are provided with the support to be able to deliver and continuously improve their service delivery.” Khupe adds that the programme ensures Zevoli Growth Partners properly understands the mining corporate’s needs and makes sure that they enable MSMEs to meet those needs before a procurement relationship is established. After its initial success, Zevoli Growth Partners and AMI plan to roll the programme out to MSMEs and mining companies in additional communities. Focus on practical tools Rebecca Harrison, Chief Executive Officer at AMI, says the company’s unique practical learning approach enables businesses to immediately implement tools and practices for improved resilience and growth. “AMI’s learning programmes provide busy business owners with practical tools, templates and resources that can be downloaded on-the-go and immediately implemented in the business, which leads to very tangible businesses impact, with businesses supported by AMI growing on average 35% in 2021 and created 4 new jobs each”. From a corporate Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) and service delivery perspective, you have two of the longest-standing and most capable businesses’ delivery teams coming together to deliver a uniquely powerful solution for MSMEs, and for corporates looking to provide practical solutions to the suppliers and entrepreneurs with whom they work.” she concluded.
