Developing Future-Fit Leaders for the Green Economy All Stories Sylvia Achando Position: Lead, Collection Department Company: Solar Panda Kenya Programme: a86a5475-1c9e-4aa2-9a90-d65d1b887ebc Country: Kenya Sylvia Achando, 31, was just out of college when she began her career in solar energy. She now leads the collections department at Solar Panda, which provides innovative home solar to remote villages in Kenya. A lot has changed ever since she first started out 7 years ago. So, growth for Sylvia has meant, not just hard work but upskilling. She is part of an unheralded and unlikely category of middle managers responsible for driving energy access and combating climate change across Africa. Managers like her oversee around 150,000 people employed in Africa’s off-grid sector. Like any emerging professional, Sylvia had to grow her skills as responsibilities in her company grew. Through Solar Panda, Sylvia, along with 500 emerging leaders across 85 companies, levelled up their management skills under UKAID’s Transforming Energy Access platform and its Empowering Managers programme, implemented by AMI. The focus of the programme, part of a consortium within the Off-Grid Talent Initiative (OGTI), was to improve managerial capacity and, consequently, the impact of companies in delivering private sector solutions. “I used to struggle with giving feedback, now I am able to communicate effectively and delegate tasks, which has helped the team’s performance,” she reflects. In 2021, the UK government during COP26 announced a new ‘scale-up’ funding to the tune of £126 million for Transforming Energy Access (TEA). With programmes like Empowering Managers initially funded by TEA, in managers like Sylvia are getting a vote of confidence. Impact data from the Empowering Managers programme illustrates the efficacy of such upskilling, indicating how they are already paying dividends for both the sector’s rising managerial talent, as well as businesses. For example, after the programme, 82% of companies participating noted improvements in their company’s key performance metric. 73% also reported increased company revenues whilst 100% of participants reported improved management skills. Joy Asuke, HR manager for Solar Panda, enrolled seven other women managers along with Sylvia into the programme with the intention of helping them excel in the sector’s uniqueness. “It’s a very unique space where negotiation, communication, and critical thinking skills are very important. Team managers who work with local communities have to navigate, educate, and convince towards purchasing solar kits,” says Joy, who manages Panda’s 250 staff. Joy adds, “Women are doing better in management positions, and as an organisation, we are keen to grow them in leadership because we see them bring a lot of commitment, patience, and a go-getter spirit quality, critical in the rural communities we work.” Companies within Africa’s green sector, therefore, need managers with skill beyond communication, teamwork, project planning, problem solving and entrepreneurial mindset. These businesses also require leaders who can drive private sector solutions to the climate crisis: working with remote teams in rural areas, building innovative clean energy products, creating jobs, improving livelihoods, and developing products that lower greenhouse gas emissions. As those like Sylvia become business owners and part of ‘middle management’, they continue to be, on the frontlines of combating climate change across the continent. A fact that makes their development and place in the clean energy sector very serious business!
- How better communication helped a manager improve sales | AMI
How better communication helped a manager improve sales All Stories Jared Winston Ouda Position: Sales Manager Company: Orb Energy Programme: Country: Kenya Jared Winston Ouda, Sales manager at Orb Energy Kenya, managed to motivate his team to hit sales targets, improve a key company process, and improve staff retention in his team – all based on learning from AMI’s Empowering Managers programme. Jared was one of 15 managers who graduated last year from the first cohort of Empowering Managers, a UKAID-supported training programme for African managers in the off-grid energy sector. It’s a practical 6-month part-time programme that combines interactive in-person workshops with online learning and on-the-job practice. All in-person sessions have since been replaced with interactive webinars following the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. So far, over 300 managers have started the programme from 19 different companies in Africa. 48% of graduates from the first cohort had already secured a new job, promotion, or salary increase since beginning their learning journey with AMI. All of them shared stories of how the programme has helped them improve performance in their teams and company, often generating direct impact on sales or profitability. For Jared, improving his management skills – specifically around communication, delegation, and giving feedback – has directly improved retention of staff, delivery chain efficiency, and sales volume. His boss has noticed, and he’s received positive feedback. “Before, I had challenges with communicating in the team and in my personal life. I was assuming that communication had been understood, and also taking on other people’s problems – I struggled to delegate. But with the tools from AMI, I’m now focusing on a more strategic role. My boss has given feedback that I’m now managing better and my communication with the team has improved,” he said. “Now, we don’t just fire people when they don’t perform, we review performance, and give clear feedback, using the AMI tools. Leaders now know what to do, we’ve identified weaknesses and challenges across the team and are able to support them. We’re managing to grow a performing team.” Jared also described how improved communication, feedback, and planning helped eliminate inefficiency and improve a key company process, that was previously taking a whole week, due to miscommunication and delay. Since implementing what he learned on the programme, Jared and his team have reduced this process to 3 days – right on target. And finally, Jared has seen a direct impact on top-line sales, thanks to his improved management style. “Overall, the growth of the sales team has improved, because everyone understands what they want to achieve. The team is improving every day and focusing on the sales goals. We can now perform in line with company goals.”
- AMI Celebrates the Tourism and Hospitality Sector’s Impact in Rwanda | AMI
Back to News News Rwanda AMI Celebrates the Tourism and Hospitality Sector’s Impact in Rwanda 30 Sept 2022 Every year on 27 September, the world celebrates World Tourism Day to recognise the role tourism plays in economic growth through job creation and providing opportunities for communities to prosper. To mark World Tourism Day, the African Management Institute hosted an event at Norrsken Kigali House with its programme graduates, partners and industry stakeholders to share and celebrate the impact made through their programmes. The event was also an occasion for AMI to affirm its long-term commitment to empower businesses working in the sector by equipping them with needed skills and practical tools to grow. “Rwanda’s tourism and hospitality industry has been experiencing significant transformation and growth, providing high potential for employment opportunities to young Rwandans. AMI’s unique approach to entrepreneurship and business management training has been preparing businesses and their workforces for any challenging situation, enabled them to seize growth opportunities, and rethink tourism”, says Malik Shaffy, Country Manager at AMI. Over the last three years, AMI has supported businesses in Rwanda under the Mastercard Foundation’s Hanga Ahazaza initiative , which increases employment opportunities for young people while expanding the tourism and hospitality sector in Rwanda. Thanks to Entrepreneurship and Workplace Learning Programmes, Businesses bounced back strongly in 2021, and created jobs while others invested in their teams. AMI offered a range of programmes - open enrollment in the market, inhouse programmes with clients, and impact-driven programmes with partners focused on specific sectors to drive transformation, with the following results: Through AMI’s workplace learning programmes provided under the Hanga Ahazaza Initiative, Leaders, managers and professionals trained report that the skills acquired have improved their performance and that they are proud to contribute to the development of Rwanda’s tourism and hospitality industry. Patrick Twizeyimana - Sales & Marketing Manager, Sina Gerard Entreprise Urwibutso Nyirangarama has been working in the tourism and hospitality industry for eight years. He is currently working at Sina Gerard Entreprise Urwibutso in Nyirangarama in sales and marketing. Joining the industry was a dream come true for him. He participated in AMI’s Inspiring Managers programme to expand his managerial skills. Prioritisation, self-awareness and emotional management are among the most important skills gained from the programme. Patrick has also trained his colleagues on how to use different management tools from AMI. “Working in tourism and hospitality requires you to understand and show a high level of customer care and work with others in a conducive environment. AMI equipped me with those skills, and it’s really boosted my working spirit,” says Patrick. As Rwanda joins the world to celebrate World Tourism Day, he is proud of the progress made and his contribution to a growing sector. “I now see myself as someone who had a role in the sector’s journey to growth. Rwanda works hard to attract investors in this sector and people involved need to know that they have what it takes to succeed and offer good services,” adds Patrick. The Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact on different sectors, and tourism and hospitality were no exception. Aime Habihirwe, a university graduate in Hospitality Management in Culinary Arts and now a Head Chief at Stafford Coffee Brewers Company found the pandemic particularly difficult. However, thanks to AMI’s workplace learning programme, he has gained professional skills and experience which have taken him to the next level in his career. “I gained skills that made me confident to do the work and effectively collaborate with colleagues by communicating positively and managing my emotions when making decisions. This helped me get promoted from an Assistant Chef to a Head Chef,” says Aime. Vanessa Kanyabutembo, a young Rwandan who has been in the tourism and hospitality sector for six years and who now works as the Head of the Front Office at White Stone Apartments, says that the skills acquired from AMI’s training helped her adjust to difficult situations, including Covid-19 pandemic. “Consistent learning is a necessity in this sector. With AMI’s workplace learning programme, I was able to visualise my future by identifying where I am now, where I want to be and what I need to do. Before, it was hard for me to adjust with the Covid-19 situation, but through the training, I managed to adapt to the new environment which has positively impacted my work. I’m excited to keep learning and contributing to the sector,” says Vanessa. Ensuring a Sustainable Future for Businesses in Rwanda All Stories Marthe Niyonshuti Position: Founder Company: Amahoro Farming Business Ltd Programme: Survive to Thrive Country: Rwanda Inspired by her passion to uplift her community, Marthe Niyonshuti founded Amahoro Farming Business Ltd located in Karongi District in 2017, which was legally registered in 2020. The business’s brand name “Amahoro” was derived from her firstborn’s name as a way to make her business impactful to both her family and the community at large. Rwanda’s poultry industry is a great avenue towards attaining the country’s national food and nutrition security, income generation and job creation. According to the five-year Livestock Master plan from the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources , Rwanda aims to gain an increase of 124% in chicken meat and 110% in egg production by 2023. With over 1,000 chickens of different kinds, including the Sasso chicken, a fast-growing hybrid broiler, Marthe has impacted her community, especially small-scale farmers, by creating earning opportunities. “I now have five employees, including two full-time and three part-time employees, which is contributing to their livelihoods. Working with the community has been helpful to smallholder farmers to get chickens or eggs easily, and access manure for their agricultural activities,” says Marthe. In 2020, through Rwanda Youth Agribusiness Forum (RYAF), Marthe learnt about entrepreneurship development programmes offered by the African Management Institute (AMI) which later guaranteed her an opportunity to attend the Survive to Thrive programme provided under the partnership with Mastercard Foundation. Through AMI’s business tools such as Cash Flow Forecasting and Key Performance Indicator and Planning, Marthe levelled up her business skills and operations, which enabled her to grow her mindset on how to do business without limiting her delivery market size. Marthe commends the programme on how her perspective on business shifted and widened her networking scope: “Before joining the programme, I wasn’t able to identify the status of my business as I couldn’t know whether I was making a profit or a loss; I was fortunate to meet and connect with my fellow entrepreneurs operating in the same field, and I learnt from them how to address business challenges and improve my business productivity. Most importantly, thanks to AMI, I have initiated a business reporting strategy and improved my decision-making,” says Marthe. Owing to her resilience, in 2022, Marthe was rewarded through the AMI Resilience Prize as the most impactful entrepreneur in the Western Province and received 1,000,000 Rwf together with free access to AMI’s business tools to enable her to keep growing her business. From networking opportunities to the business tools acquired, Marthe urges her fellow entrepreneurs to join AMI programmes to grow, nurture and sustain their businesses. “Entrepreneurs often do not think of the long-term benefits though the results may be gradual. I would encourage entrepreneurs to join AMI programmes as they help you rethink their business models and acquire tools to shape your business. I am looking forward to attending and benefitting from other opportunities in future,” Marthe adds. With a growing demand for chicken products, Marthe intends to expand and diversify Amahoro Farming Business by maximising the quantity of meat, egg and poultry manure supplied in Rwanda and the region. African Management Institute (AMI) offers entrepreneurship development programmes including – Business Survival Bootcamp, Survive to Thrive and Take Your Business Online, with the aim of supporting businesses and entrepreneurs to thrive. Through the partnership with Mastercard Foundation, under its Hanga Ahazaza initiative, AMI is expanding its reach to support many businesses across Rwanda. - Pro Strategy Takes the Lead in Digital Transformation Across Africa | AMI
Pro Strategy Takes the Lead in Digital Transformation Across Africa All Stories Pascal Aloo Position: Founder Company: Pro Strategy Programme: Grow Your Business Country: Kenya As an educator, Pascal Aloo recognized a significant gap in Africa’s approach to digital transformation. While technology had the potential to drive innovation and improve lives, many young professionals lacked the skills to harness its full potential. This realization led to the creation of Pro Strategy, a company dedicated to equipping young Africans with the digital knowledge they need to thrive in their careers and businesses. Despite a strong demand for its courses, Pro Strategy faced challenges in scaling. "Before joining the GYB programme, we had proven that our courses were needed, but setting up systems, automating processes, and managing operations efficiently remained difficult. We wanted to grow and reach more learners, but we lacked the right tools to do so," Pascal explains. Joining AMI’s Grow Your Business (GYB) programme provided the structure and resources needed to take Pro Strategy to the next level. "The biggest learning for me was the tools, especially the OKR Tracker. It allowed us to capture key organisational data, track qualitative feedback, and hold coaching sessions with our team. This helped us improve production, align staff with company values, and provide better support for our employees." A major shift came from adopting goal-setting and tracking mechanisms. "The practice of setting targets and reflecting on them monthly transformed how we operate. Team discussions around goals allowed us to work backwards, identifying where we could have increased our efforts based on data. It also encouraged ownership, everyone was working towards a shared vision." The impact was clear: Pro Strategy achieved an 84% revenue increase in 2024. This growth came from a mix of improved internal processes, stronger team motivation, and better communication. "We sustained existing clients while successfully attracting new ones," Pascal notes. The business expansion also led to job creation, with new hires in product development, sales, and marketing - all young professionals. "We believe in empowering the next generation, and I’m proud that we maintain a 50/50 gender balance. One of our employees is a young mother, and it means a lot to us that we can provide stable opportunities that support families." “The programme gave us the tools we needed to scale, and the results speak for themselves. We improved our processes, set clear goals, and created a stronger team culture. With better systems in place, we’ve grown our revenue and expanded our team, hiring young professionals who are now shaping the future of digital skills in Africa” Beyond its commercial success, Pro Strategy is driving capacity building at scale. "Our biggest objective is to equip learners with relevant skills that accelerate their careers and businesses. Recently, we hosted a mental health workshop with over 200 participants, and the impact was monumental." The company also integrates sustainability into its training. "We teach modern skills with an environmental lens—raising awareness on green sector opportunities and showing young professionals how they can be champions for the planet." Reflecting on the journey, Pascal sees the GYB programme as a turning point for Pro Strategy. "It gave us the structure, confidence, and tools to grow. Today, we’re not just expanding as a business, we’re shaping the future of Africa’s workforce." Download Pascal Aloo's Story Download AMI's 2024 Impact Report

High-value learning on the go All Stories Kelvin Kang’ethe Position: Business Owner Company: Anchor Technologies Programme: Grow Your Business Country: Kenya A traditional business training course wouldn’t work for entrepreneur Kelvin Kang’ethe, owner of Anchor Technologies. Because of his customer’s demands, he needed a flexible programme that would deliver high value for the limited time he was able to invest—and that’s exactly what he found in AMI’s GYB programme, sponsored by KCB Bank Kenya. “It’s suitable mostly for people in business like myself, where I don’t have to spend my whole day in class,” he explains. Because participants choose their own topics of study, and most of the course content is online, Kelvin could gain important skills and knowledge without disrupting his business operations. “You log in to the site, go to the unit that you want to study, download all the materials that you need to download, and you read on the move. It was so easy for me.” In addition to the programme’s flexibility, Kelvin also appreciated how its practical insights strengthened his overall business strategy. “Grow Your Business has completely changed my approach to how I do business,” he says. He has shifted to focusing on corporate accounts that are more robust and provide regular orders. As a result, his profits have increased and his debts have decreased. “Grow your business was such an eye opener because it’s made me start now realizing what I’m doing here, knowing my business better,” Kelvin explains.

- Developing Future-Fit Leaders for the Green Economy | AMI
Developing Future-Fit Leaders for the Green Economy All Case Studies Case Study Impact at Scale Developing Future-Fit Leaders for the Green Economy Background The off-grid energy sector in Africa depends on middle managers like Sylvia Achando to enhance energy access and address climate change. Through the UKAID-funded Empowering Managers program, Sylvia and over 500 leaders from 85 companies have gained essential skills for managing remote areas using AMI’s TEA platform. Challenge In Kenya’s off-grid solar sector, middle managers like Sylvia Achando are crucial for improving energy access and tackling climate change. However, they face skill gaps in communication, delegation, and problem-solving as they take on more responsibilities in a complex industry. Solution UKAID's Empowering Managers programme under the Transforming Energy Access (TEA) platform provided training to Sylvia and 500 emerging leaders from 85 companies, focusing on practical skills for managing teams in the off-grid energy sector. Results After the program, 82% of companies reported improved performance, with 73% experiencing revenue growth. Sylvia and her team enhanced performance, and Solar Panda saw stronger leadership among women managers like Sylvia, who are better equipped to implement climate solutions in rural Africa. This journey has been a learning curve, teaching me the value of resilience and persistence. I used to struggle with giving feedback, but now I can communicate effectively and delegate tasks, which has significantly improved my team’s performance. Sylvia Achando Human Resource & Admin Solar Panda The story behind the journey Sylvia Achando, 31, was just out of college when she began her career in solar energy.
