African Management Institute (AMI) annual Impact Report for the year 2024. Overview Impact Stories Rapport en francais Read the Report Download the Report (EN) Rapport en francais Connect with us Overview African entrepreneurs have the solutions to Africa’s problems. Global funding is in flux, and investing in them has never been this urgent. With AMI-supported businesses creating 25,000+ jobs in 2024, with 85% of direct jobs for women, it’s clear - building enterprise is the most effective way to address the jobs crisis and improve livelihoods Africa’s entrepreneurs are investing in themselves to keep growing through global uncertainty. We must match their ambition with our support. From livelihood generators to industry-shaping scale-ups, no entrepreneur can be left behind. Download the AMI 2024 Impact Report Our key learnings from 2024 1. Growth = Jobs = Impact Evidence-backed business support drives growth, jobs, and community impact. With SME support rising 7.5x to 28k in 2024, AMI-backed businesses grew 17% and jobs 18%, achieving a 16.8% three-year CAGR. 2. SME growth is a big bet for livelihoods Supporting business growth is key to African prosperity amid global uncertainty. Every $1 invested in AMI programs yields $9.85 for employees, with 85% of new jobs created for women. 3. Entrepreneurs are investing in themselves Alongside hundreds of larger firms investing in team growth through AMI, 259 small business founders self-funded AMI support in 2024. Africa’s entrepreneurs aren’t waiting for change—they’re creating it. 4. Youth and women are leading the way Youth (77%) and women (50%) made up most participants, exceeding average business growth. Women created 64% of all jobs and held 85% of direct jobs generated. 5. Every entrepreneur. Every dream. Unlocking Africa’s potential means building businesses at every level. Big firms matter, but so do nano entrepreneurs driving income for families and communities—where even small changes create lasting impact. 6. Systems innovation for the last mile To support rural MSMEs effectively, we must use inclusive offline tech (like Telegram courses in local languages) and link them to AMI-trained local BDS providers. Government partnership is essential to success. 7. Beyond the founder Long-term success relies on leadership at every level. In 2024, AMI trained 4,035 managers, leaders, and high-potential youth to boost organizational competitiveness and shape practice and policy across key sectors. ‘I chose to grow’ Wanjiku Ng'ethe, Founder Karen Fruits & Veges Download the AMI 2024 Impact Report (English) Download the AMI 2024 Impact Report (French) Investing in business champions at every level To address the jobs crisis, we need thriving businesses and people at every level - from rural nano businesses to resilient SMEs to industry-shaping scaleups and corporate titans. That's why we've developed a tailored and data-driven approach to business and human capital support that equips leaders and their teams to achieve their dreams, drive progress and create jobs, no matter their size. Larger Businesses Larger businesses create the most jobs, and Africa has too few of them. Human capital is a critical challenge for businesses aiming to compete at a regional, continental and global level. Our Enterprise division works with hundreds of these larger businesses - on a purely commercial basis - to train their teams, strengthen leadership and management, and drive performance for large scale impact and job creation. Medium Businesses Businesses create the largest numbers of absolute jobs, and with the right support can become regional and sector champions. Small Businesses Businesses are the engine of our economies. Micro Businesses Our data shows that supporting nano and micro businesses drives resilience and protects jobs in the most fragile businesses - and we regularly see job-creating champions emerge from this segment, with those in the top 20% creating almost 5 jobs each - a huge increase from a small base. Doubling down on the champions The Top 20% of performers of businesses in programmes: Created of the jobs 81% DOUBLED their jobs 66% increase in revenue on avg. per business 44.4% accessed finance at an average ticket size of $47,500 ‘I chose to grow’ The Grow Your Business (GYB) programme pushed me to face tough truths about my business, from poor planning to staff issues. But it also gave me practical tools to turn things around. I became more organised, improved accountability, and learned how to motivate my team. Since then, our revenue has grown by over 84% and we’ve hired a young team member for fulfilment. - AMI closes $1.8M Series A to fund pan-African growth | AMI
Back to News Update Africa AMI closes $1.8M Series A to fund pan-African growth 31 Jan 2019 AMI is thrilled to announce our $1.8M Series A funding round to support expansion of our practical and scalable approach to skills development for Africa. French impact investment firm Investisseurs & Partenaires (I&P) has invested $1M in AMI, joining our existing funders AHL Ventures and Argidius Foundation, who also contributed to the $1.8M round. Skills development is one of the most exciting challenges and pressing needs facing Africa. At AMI, we’ve developed a practical and scalable solution that is already transforming organisations and careers across the continent, and we’re looking forward to reaching new people and places with this investment. We’re incredibly grateful to all the partners, clients and friends who have supported us on this journey so far. Since our launch in 2014, we’ve developed Africa’s first social learning platform, established offices in Nairobi, Johannesburg and Kigali, and trained over 20,000 individuals through 70 blended learning programmes in 13 African countries. We’ve been privileged to work with multi-nationals like KLM, SC Johnson and Nestle, innovators like Mkopa, Zola, Copia and BitPesa and ambitious regional firms like Kenya’s Equity Group, KCB and Unga, and South Africa’s Pie City and MediaMark. We’ve also rolled out large-scale programmes reaching thousands of entrepreneurs and youth in partnership with major players like MasterCard Foundation, Shell Foundation, USAID, GIZ and others. So much training and education in Africa and globally has focused on credentials and box-ticking. This simply won’t work if we are to unlock the next generation of African talent. We need people doing their jobs well, stepping up to lead, starting and growing businesses. We need organisations powered by strong teams at every level – not just at the top. Over the last few years, we’ve worked really hard to ensure that in all AMI programmes – whether for seasoned executives, hustling entrepreneurs or young people just starting their careers – we focus on on-the-job performance. We don’t do ‘hit and run workshops’ (they might be fun, but they don’t work – the research is very clear on this). We don’t do formal exams (great for school leavers, not so much for managers). We work with our clients to deliver learning journeys that make a real difference to how individuals, teams and whole companies perform. More than 70% of larger companies, and almost 100% of SMEs, report tangible improvements in company performance after working with AMI. This new investment will help us make our innovative web/mobile platform and blended methodology even more impactful and intuitive for companies and individuals across Africa. It will also allow us to adapt and expand our library of 65 online courses and 2000+ practical tools to help fill even more diverse skill gaps, for more organisations, in more languages. We’re always looking for visionary clients and partners who want to transform their teams or empower entrepreneurs and youth across Africa. We’re also always on the look out for talented people to join our growing international team. So if you’d like to talk, please get in touch at info@africanmanagers.com . Thank you! - Odile Ufitinema | AMI
Odile Ufitinema District - Rubavu The Impact Footprint Growth Guide: Odile ufitinema, 32 Location: Western Province, Rubavu District, Nyakiriba Sector, Gikombe Cell, Rugerero Village Total Ecosystem Portfolio: 302 Youth MSMEs Trained & Mentored Demographic Breakdown: 302 women, 6 men, 4 persons with disabilities Odile Ufitinema stepped into the role of Growth Guide with a strong sense of confidence in her ability to support others, built from years of training and experience in entrepreneurship. She had long believed that young people, when given the right guidance and encouragement, could build successful income-generating activities, and saw this role as an opportunity to turn that belief into action, particularly by helping youth gain the courage to start and grow their own businesses. Her impact is visible both within her own family and across the wider community. She began by helping those closest to her adopt better financial habits, encouraging them to save through cooperatives, promote their products, track income and expenses, and improve how they engage with customers. She extended this support to young people in her community by guiding them to form savings groups, understand their market competition, and build the confidence to approach financial institutions. One of the most powerful examples of her impact is a young woman she supported who started with very small earnings, using just 50 RWF to begin trading vegetables. Through consistency and reinvestment, she gradually grew her business, reaching a capital of 1,000,000 RWF within a year and a half, and is now supplying other traders. Stories like this highlight how small beginnings, when combined with guidance and determination, can lead to significant transformation. Odile has reached and continues to support a large number of young people, building on her previous leadership roles within youth groups and her ongoing commitment to providing training and mentorship. Her approach focuses on making financial access more achievable by helping entrepreneurs understand available loan options, including those with low interest rates, and guiding them through the process of preparing requirements. She also supports those without collateral by encouraging alternative approaches, such as contributing a portion of the required funds while structuring their business plans to meet financial institution expectations. Unlike many areas where access remains limited, some of the youth Odile has supported have successfully secured loans, which she describes as a deeply rewarding experience. It has strengthened her confidence and motivated her to continue supporting even more young entrepreneurs on their journey toward growth and independence. Through this role, she has also grown personally, gaining stronger confidence, public speaking skills, and a deeper understanding of inclusion, particularly the importance of ensuring that women, youth, and persons with disabilities are equally supported and empowered. She actively encourages collaboration within households, emphasizing that when families work together, businesses are more likely to succeed and grow. Her vision is to see young people become confident, innovative, and self-reliant, creating their own opportunities and investing in ideas that generate income. She believes that entrepreneurship, combined with creativity and access to financial services, can transform not only individual lives but entire communities. Her message to young people is clear and practical: seek knowledge, stay active, avoid idleness, and use available platforms to learn from others who are already succeeding in business. She encourages them to be creative, take initiative, and make use of training opportunities, believing that growth begins with action and a willingness to keep learning. The Power of Access: How one entrepreneur is helping thousands of African students turn opportunity into impact. All Stories Bimpe Femi-Oyewo Position: Founder and CEO Company: Edward Consulting Programme: Aspire Business Growth Programme Country: Nigeria Every year, thousands of talented African students dream of studying at some of the world's leading universities. Many never make it there. Not because they lack ability, ambition, or potential, but because they lack something far less visible: information, guidance, funding, and someone to show them what is possible. Bimpe Femi-Oyewo knows that journey because she lived it. As a teenager from Nigeria preparing to pursue higher education in the United States, she discovered that navigating international education had little to do with intelligence alone. "I realised that students were making life-changing decisions with limited information, little guidance and almost no visibility into the opportunities available to them." That experience stayed with her. Years later, it became the foundation of Edward Consulting, an education consultancy built on the belief that talent should never be limited by access. The firm helps students navigate the international education journey. From admissions and scholarships to mentorship, visa support, and financing -making distant opportunities attainable. As the organisation grew, so did its responsibilities. Edward Consulting had earned students' trust through deeply personalised support, where every application, scholarship, and interview could shape a student's future. Preserving that standard of care became increasingly difficult, especially as many of the organisation's core functions continued to depend on Bimpe. "It wasn't simply about hiring more people," she explains. "We needed people with the right skills, the right mindset and a genuine belief in our mission." Protecting the quality of support often meant walking away from revenue and growth opportunities. "There were opportunities we declined and revenue we willingly left on the table because we refused to compromise on quality. These were students' dreams, careers and futures. If we couldn't serve someone exceptionally well, we would rather say no." Bimpe realised that sustaining Edward Consulting's impact would require more than hard work. The organisation needed stronger systems, stronger leadership, and the capacity to grow beyond its founder. That search eventually led her to AMI's Aspire Programme. "I already understood concepts like budgeting, planning, and performance management," she says. "What Aspire did was help me become far more intentional in how I applied them." Through tools such as organisational risk assessments and scenario planning, Bimpe was challenged to step back from the day-to-day demands of running the business and view it more strategically. She began identifying vulnerabilities before they became problems, preparing for different growth scenarios and making decisions guided by clearer priorities rather than instinct. Even familiar frameworks took on new meaning. "I already knew what a SWOT analysis was," she says. "But AMI helped me apply it in a much more practical way. It challenged me to translate what I knew about the business into clear priorities and measurable actions." The shift was soon visible across the organisation. Annual retreats evolved into structured strategy sessions. Quarterly reviews replaced informal check-ins. Financial planning became more disciplined, processes were documented, and leadership gradually shifted from one founder carrying the business to a team with clearly defined roles and shared accountability. "Building a successful business isn't just about execution," Bimpe reflects. "It's also about structure, reflection, community and intentional leadership." Rather than hiring simply to meet demand, Edward Consulting became more deliberate about building the right team, placing equal emphasis on technical ability, cultural fit and a shared commitment to its mission. This approach has since guided the recruitment of an Educational Consultant and an Executive Assistant. Onboarding has become a collective effort, while continuous learning and professional development ensure that as the organisation grows, its people grow alongside it. "We are no longer just growing the business," Bimpe says. " We are growing people, systems and leadership capacity at the same time." The results followed. With stronger systems and greater organisational capacity, Edward Consulting has recorded significant revenue growth, expanded through carefully selected strategic partnerships and increased its ability to serve students without compromising the personalised support that defines its work. Over the past seven years, the organisation has helped African students secure more than US$30 million in scholarships and funding opportunities. Yet Bimpe believes the true measure of success cannot be captured in numbers alone. It can be seen in students like Bright Uwakwe. Bright came to Edward Consulting with exceptional academic ability but daunting personal barriers. Through mentorship, admissions support, funding for SAT preparation and application fees, and encouragement through multiple visa setbacks, the organisation walked alongside him at every stage of his journey. Today, Bright has secured more than US$2.1 million in scholarship offers, earned admission to more than twelve universities, and is studying in the United States on a fully funded scholarship, becoming the first person in his family to study abroad. His story is one of thousands. Beyond changing individual lives, Edward Consulting is helping strengthen the broader education ecosystem by partnering with organisations such as GMAC across Africa to expand access through MBA fairs, CV clinics and advisory sessions, while working with universities to open more pathways for African students. From refugee students in Kakuma to young people across more than ten African countries, Edward Consulting continues to expand access to global education. It advocates for a system where African students are recognised not as statistics but as individuals with talent, ambition and futures worth investing in. For Bimpe, when one student gains access, the opportunity rarely ends with them. It reaches families, strengthens communities, inspires future leaders while creating possibilities that extend far beyond a single. That, she believes, is how you change a continent-one scholarship at a time.
