Back to News News South Africa Uber Eats & AMI Empower Restaurant Entrepreneurs with Practical Tools & Cash Prizes! 26 Jul 2024 The African Management Institute (AMI) recently partnered with Uber Eats, one of the leading food delivery companies, to launch an exciting program that transformed the lives of entrepreneurs and their businesses through practical tools and cash prizes towards their businesses. Over a six-month learning journey with AMI, entrepreneurs gained access to practical business tools, resources, and courses designed to propel their businesses forward. This initiative, known as the Grow Your Business Programme, kicked off with over 200 Uber Eats restaurant partners across South Africa invited in a selection bootcamp focused on setting up for growth. Thabang Calvin of Mofine Foods shared his experience, highlighting how the learning tools helped him improve compliance and leadership skills. The Money Practices Toolkit, in particular, stood out to him as he lacked a financial background and had been running his business based on intuition. “At the beginning of the programme, we were busy applying for the right business compliance with the City of Tshwane and setting up recording systems to capture business transactions. With the Money Practices Toolkit, that is now a possibility. Our revenue has improved because I can negotiate for discount stock prices with suppliers, saving money. I also conducted a customer survey to better understand their needs, which yielded great results,” said Thabang. “When setting growth goals using the Growth Goal Tracker, I used to aim for business objectives without a formal follow-up procedure. This tool helps me track and document progress, showing how far I am from achieving each goal. With no accounting background, the Money Practices tools guided me in recording business transactions. It’s still a learning journey, but the tools are easy to use and come with instructions. We’ve also developed better relationships with suppliers, negotiating better stock prices.” Asive Maxama, owner of Wakanda Restaurant, was among the top three entrepreneurs who received a voucher to grow her business. She focused on Talent Practices, especially Feedback & Coaching, involving her team more in decision-making and improving record-keeping to reduce costs and budget efficiently. “They now have a better understanding of the business, take on greater roles, and go the extra mile. They understand costs and have helped reduce expenses. By including the team and surveying customers for feedback, we’ve improved our reviews and better understand customer needs,” shared Asive. Tinashe Ladner Chinyang, owner of Zondo Chillspot, identified Talent Practices as a key focus from the start, aiming for staff learning, career advancement, and talent planning. “Team members help each other more, no more late arrivals, and they are more confident in their work. They understand the organizational goals better, and the team spirit has improved thanks to the Talent Practice Toolkit. Tools like the Check-in Guide, Competency Grid, Smart Goals, and Motivating People have been transformative. We created profiles for every team member using the Competency Grid, and they have shown a sense of purpose. Regular check-ins have been helpful, motivating them to connect with their inner selves and their work.” These are just a few of the many success stories from entrepreneurs who have benefited from AMI’s practical business tools designed to support growth. At AMI, we are passionate about helping entrepreneurs thrive and build thriving businesses and teams. Through programs like the Grow Your Business practical support training program, focused on growth mentality, we are pioneering Africa’s champions together with our partners. Creating a Culture of Impact: Leadership Growth at Access ARM Pensions All Stories Position: Company: Access ARM Programme: Country: Nigeria In the heart of Nigeria's financial landscape, Access ARM Pensions stands as a leading provider of innovative and secure retirement solutions. The company has carved a niche for itself by focusing on the individual, understanding that each person's financial journey is unique. Leveraging the power of data and technology, Access ARM Pensions ` delivers personalized pension plans, meticulously tailored to meet the diverse financial goals of its clients. But Access ARM Pensions goes beyond just offering plans; they empower their clients with constant innovations, transparency and efficiency that sets a new standard in the industry. The Challenge As Access ARM Pensions continued to grow and innovate, they recognized that their leadership needed to evolve as well. The company understood that to truly drive client satisfaction and secure those crucial long-term financial outcomes in an increasingly complex financial world, they needed leaders who were not only competent but also visionaries. They sought to equip their managers with the skills to navigate this complexity, to foster a workplace where employees thrived, and to consistently achieve ambitious organizational goals. The challenge was clear: How do you empower managers to bridge the gap between strategic intent and day-to-day execution, while also fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement? The answer lay in targeted leadership development. The Solution To address this need, Access ARM Pensions partnered with African Management Institute (AMI) to design and deliver a comprehensive Management Development Programme (MDP) . This practical, hands-on programme was crafted to align with Access ARM Pensions’ strategic goals, focusing on critical leadership skills, effective communication, and team management. The MDP covered a range of critical competencies, including: Strategic Leadership: Empowering managers to think strategically and make decisions that drive long-term success. Emotional Intelligence: Equipping leaders with the self-awareness and interpersonal skills needed to lead high-performing teams. Performance Management: Providing managers with the tools to set clear goals, provide constructive feedback, and foster a culture of accountability. Improved Team and People Management: Mastering the art of building high-performing teams, fostering collaboration, and empowering individuals to reach their full potential. The Impact The results have been impressive. Managers who participated in the programme have reported significant personal and professional growth: Demshak Abason Jiking reflected on the programme’s practical approach, saying, "One aspect that stood out to me was the interactive approach to tackling real-world scenarios. It was amazing how the facilitator broke down complex problems into manageable steps, making it easier to apply the strategies in practical situations." Juwiratu Ayuba Abulu also highlighted the real-world impact of the training, noting, "One of the things that really stood out to me as amazing in the program was the focus on real-world application. It wasn’t just about theory – everything we learned was designed to be immediately actionable." For John Oni , the personalized nature of the training made a lasting impression: "The courses were tailored to my needs, and I would need to continue to access the course audios to continue to improve myself." These testimonials reveal a common thread: the Management Development Programme equipped Access ARM Pensions' managers with more than just knowledge; it provided them with practical tools, real-world experience, and a renewed sense of purpose. Participants reported significant improvements in their abilities to navigate conflict, make sound decisions, and adapt to change. The Management Development Programme represents a significant investment by Access ARM Pensions in its most valuable asset: its people. By empowering its managers to lead with impact, the program has not only driven organizational transformation but has also positioned Access ARM Pensions for continued success in Nigeria's dynamic financial landscape. The program's focus on practical application, interactive learning, and real-world scenarios has equipped Access ARM Pensions' managers with the skills and knowledge to excel in their roles, to inspire their teams, and to contribute to the company's overarching mission of securing the financial futures of Nigerians. However, Africa’s entrepreneurs, small businesses, and emerging workforce are essential to developing the climate solutions of tomorrow. AMI has partnered with impact organizations like AFD and UKaid to train the leaders, innovators, and institutions best positioned to these pressing challenges. Through tailored programs, we empower individuals, businesses, and institutions with the skills needed to lead in areas such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and the circular economy—building the foundation for a resilient, climate-smart Africa. Energy Access Expanding access to affordable energy is essential for economic growth, poverty reduction, and environmental sustainability in Africa. AMI has partnered with donors and organizations like Shell Foundation and UKaid to upskill off grid and renewable energy entrepreneurs, sector leaders, and workforce teams. Through our tailored learning programs, we empower individuals, businesses, and institutions at the forefront of expanding clean, reliable, and sustainable energy access. Food Systems & Agriculture A thriving agricultural sector and more robust food systems are crucial for Africa’s economic resilience and food security. AMI has collaborated with impact partners and private companies like AGRA and Aceli to enhance the capabilities of agribusiness entrepreneurs, leaders, and companies. Through targeted learning programmes and solutions at scale, we support the individuals, organizations and teams central to building and growing resilient food systems. Future of Work A future-ready workforce is crucial for Africa’s competitiveness and adaptability in a globalized economy. AMI has partnered with industry leaders, like Uber, to equip entrepreneurs, executives, and employees with critical skills in digital literacy, problem-solving, and adaptability. Our programs support the individuals and teams navigating a rapidly changing work environment, helping them to build resilient, agile organizations across sectors. Youth & Employability Youth employability is vital to tackling high unemployment and driving economic progress in Africa. AMI has worked with impact partners like the Mastercard Foundation to provide young people, aspiring managers, and early-career professionals with job-ready skills at scale. Our programs develop the talent pipeline, supporting youth and their employers in creating meaningful opportunities for economic mobility and sustainable growth. Women & Economic Empowerment Empowering women economically is fundamental to achieving balanced growth and inclusive development. AMI’s partnerships and women-centered approach empower female entrepreneurs, leaders, and managers by addressing barriers unique to women in business. We have worked with partners like ‘Value for Women’ to embed a gender lens across our programming, leading to outsized impact for women. Through flexible, responsive programs, we equip women to thrive as business owners and leaders, fostering inclusive workplaces and driving sustainable growth across sectors. Access to Finance Access to finance for small businesses to grow and scale is often a main blocker for Africa’s scalable businesses to thrive. Often, financers point to businesses not being prepared to scale. AMI has worked with partners like ANDE and USAID to build financial literacy, confidence, and strategic acumen among entrepreneurs, leaders, and organizations. Once through our programs businesses are in a better position to secure and manage capital, supporting an inclusive financial ecosystem that fuels sustainable enterprise development. Hospitality & Tourism The ability of managers, leaders and business owners to lead teams and grow their operations to be a driver for a flourishing hospitality and tourism sector, a key job creator across the continent.. Driving your business forward and making community impact All Stories Claudine Niyonzima Position: Co-founder Company: San Tech Ltd Programme: Country: Rwanda “I have learned that when a business is well managed, it cannot fail, and knowing your customers and their needs is the foundation of your business’s success.” Claudine Niyonzima is an entrepreneur and co-founder of SAN Tech, a smart application and networking technology service provider based in Rwanda that equips young IT technicians, especially young women, with innovation and development skills. She is one of the African Management Institute’s Resilience Prize winners. AMI caught up with her to discuss how winning the Prize and joining the Business Survival Bootcamp and Survive to Thrive programme took her business to new heights. Founded in 2019, SAN Tech was born from a thought that Claudine and her colleagues had back at university to make their skills profitable. Beyond developing computer applications and repairing computers, SAN Tech has established a Tech Hub to provide students with training, internships, and career guidance to contribute to Rwanda’s ICT sector. Claudine believes that their X-Factor is being able to not only equip students with entrepreneurial skills but also create learning opportunities for them, which is a launch pad for their innovation. After completing AMI’s one-month Business Survival Bootcamp and a three-month Survive to Thrive programme, both fully covered by Mastercard Foundation, Claudine says that these programmes have given the business a clear purpose. “They trained us on setting smart goals as an entrepreneur. This enlightened me about identifying monthly profit and loss in the business as well as identifying which side is more profitable than others, thus identifying where to put a lot of effort. Last but not least, having goals helped me to know how to manage and best use our business assets,” Claudine says. Claudine adds that the programmes not only equipped her with goal setting skills but also provided her with effective problem solving tools designed to help entrepreneurs address internal challenges or customers’ complaints. “Whenever we have a pressing business issue, we use these tools to analyse and understand the root cause. This helps us to come up with an effective solution,” she says. In mid-2022, Claudine won the AMI Resilience Prize representing the City of Kigali thanks to her business growth and its impact on the community. Through the Prize, Claudine received Rwf 1,000,000 to invest in the business – an opportunity she describes as a game changer. She encourages and urges other entrepreneurs to join one of African Management Institute’s programmes in Rwanda. She believes these programmes will play an important role in her business success. “My message to fellow entrepreneurs is that AMI has different programmes designed to help their businesses thrive and reach new heights. That’s why I would encourage them to apply and take advantage of this opportunity,” says Claudine. With the aim of enabling 2,500 Rwandan entrepreneurs to bounce back from the COVID-19 crisis, the Mastercard Foundation and the African Management Institute (AMI) expanded their partnership in Rwanda with new entrepreneurship development programmes, namely Business Survival Bootcamp, Survive to Thrive and Take Your Business Online. Through the support provided to entrepreneurs, Claudine and other graduates have been able to make their business stay on its feet and increase revenues.
